cancer ribbon scarf

In my Picasa album I have a photo of a cancer ribbon scarf I made a few years ago. Someone inquired about the pattern and I went hunting it down. I remembered writing it up, but I knew I had not published it because it is the exact same ribbon as in the cancer ribbon afghan but just fewer double crochets on each side of the ribbon. Each "ribbon" is 12" long and you can make as many as you want.

If you remember the scarf - and gee why wouldn't you remember one picture of a scarf several years back?? - I worked ribbons in one direction and then reversed for the opposite side as I normally do when working a patterned scarf so that when it hangs you get the same visual. However, in this particular scarf, the point where I changed from the original to the reverse ribbons caused a bulging at that point in the scarf.

I never made another one but if I should do so, there are options to get around this. I could make all the ribbons face the same direction, of course. I could use a smaller hook at that section. I could purposely use a tighter tension at the wider parts of the ribbon. Any other thoughts?

ribbon scarf

A while back I purchased a pattern at Annie's Attic for a ribbon scarf. The actual designer is one I recognized - Cherie Marie Leck of Craft Designs for you, a lovely person and talented designer. I have several of her crochet hooks. I digress. This design uses half double crochet. That is not a stitch I'm overly fond of, but I tell ya I did this entire scarf using hdc and it was a breeze! The pattern was well written and it took no time to complete. I did it in one evening, a few hours of TV watching.

I am going to give you a tip which doesn't benefit me but will help you. I had trouble finding the pattern again to get my link here (I did find it eventually in the exact place I should have looked in the first place - my bookshelf!) and while looking I ran across the same pattern book at Knit Picks for half price. I downloaded mine from AA and used it on my ipad with the Kindle app.

This is not a long scarf. Lengthwise, from longest portion it is 50", from shortest portion it is 45". The width is 5". I used Bernat Giggles Tickled Pink worsted weight yarn. I'm pretty sure I used an H for the body and an I for my foundation chain.

When you work the chain for the hole,it needs to be worked loosely and finish at approximately the same place as your 15 stitches end. (You'll see what I mean if you work it.) The tapered end is so clever. It's just a skip stitch.

I love this scarf and I will be making another one after I make a couple more dishcloths. :-)

Things should have slowed down now that the new site is up, right? heh That hasn't been the case, but most of it is not to do with the site. As far as I'm aware, things are working smoothly there. If you run into any problems, holler out to me so I can correct them. There are still a few things that need to be done, like photos on the dictionary pages. That will be done in time. I also hope to do more videos soon.

In the meantime, on my hook this week... more cross-stitch squares. This time for a lapghan for a cancer patient, friend of a friend.

Here is the finished piece. It is about 44" square, using 36 six inch squares and joined with the continuous join. Yarn is whatever I had in my stash. The red is I Love This Yarn red. The medium blue is Red Heart Delft Blue.  I think the grey is also I Love This Yarn. There is some Vanna's Choice in there as well. I think the light tan is either Annie's Choice or Impeccable. The assembly is Red Heart Super Saver Aran.

I am really pleased with the way it all came together.
