Wander scarf

Yarn: Wander acrylic red

Hook: #7/4.5mm

Foundation chain: 22

Pattern: straight dc for 120 rows

Size: 5 1/2" x 61"

This scarf, through no fault of its own, took me many days to complete. I've been having health issues and just haven't felt like expending the energy to finish it. It's done now though and I'm pleased with how it looks and feels. It's very soft.

baby afghan and wooble and gifts

Firstly, I want to share what I got in the mail over the weekend. My friend Fran sent me the cutest little quilted pocket prayer cloth. I've never seen anything like it. It's adorable. So pretty. She also sent a prayer card which is so special and a pocket heart

Yarn:  Love This Yarn Soft Blue

Hook: H/5.0mm footprints in the sand by Laurie Whitaker

Size: 33" x 36"

Pattern: foundation chain 102. Call the Midwife, video by Fiber Spider for the body, for the border I referenced Jonna Martinez's Call the Midwife. I worked 2 rows of V stitches. I worked 6 "flowers" across and 10 pattern rows.

I have used Fiber Spider's videos many times in the past and this one in particular several times. I use it to get me started if I've not done a Call the Midwife in a while. Now YouTube has put ads within the video and even though they are short it takes you out of the groove you're in. You're crocheting along and wham an ad. I have to stop and skip it. Sometimes there are two ads so you have to wait a few seconds and then again for the second one. It's VERY annoying. I've noticed this on videos by others and usually it's not important and I just leave, but this time I wanted to go through the whole video. It did not make me happy. I did it though and finished one section which I can now use to continue.

I must note that I even see ads on my own videos. I could not find a way to turn them off for my visitors. So far as I am aware I do not get paid for these either.

In addition to finishing this blanket, I started working on a Barbie Wooble kit which comes with a Barbie crochet hook. You know I had to get it. I've not done amigurumi before and I thought this would be a good opportunity to try it since it was for beginners. I did think it was a bit high at $40 but it comes with a LOT of videos demonstrating each step and there is the hook too. All needed supplies are included.

I have to say the videos are very well done. She is thorough and I don't think a single step was missed in the ones I watched. I did have a knot in my yarn and that was not covered but it's not a part of the pattern and that wouldn't happen to everyone. The videos are really short so if a child is doing it they would not get bored by a long video.

They answer emails very quickly and actually answer the question one asks unlike some other places where you get a non-answer.

Now here's what I discovered. I do not particularly enjoy making amigurumi. Not their fault. This just isn't my thing right now but you know that could change. Here's what I've done so far. I did learn how to put in eyes and embroider a smile (sort of).

I also learned something I didn't know. There is a right and wrong way to replace your hook after you take it out. When you place the yarn back on the hook, give a tug and if the strand closest to you moves, you've done it correctly. In 40+ years I've never heard anyone explain that. I don't know if I've explained it right myself but I understood what they meant.

This is the body. There are arms and ears and hair also but I haven't tackled those yet.

They have many kits and if you have a very beginner I would choose one without a lot of add-ons. They do have levels ... Beginner, Beginner +. Intermediate. The Barbie kit is a Beginner+. The project comes with the first round done for you and includes a cute hook - which is smart as it was the hook that drew me in.

The Barbie kit is a limited edition. There are a number of parts to it so I would save this kit for once you've got a good understanding of the basics. I guess being able to sew would be an added benefit but it's really not that hard and it's explained well.

Note that you can download the printed pattern by going to your kit, putting in the password specific to your kit, and at the upper right-hand corner there is a download link.

If I were to do another one, I was looking at Clyde. He looks simple. :-) They may wear me down yet. LOL

baby blanket

Yarn: I Love This Yarn Soft Blue, 3 skeins

Hook: H/5.0mm from Laurie Whitaker

Size: about 33" square

Pattern: I started out with the Beginner's Luck and then worked on figuring out a border using the same design.  The main bit is rows of dc, V stitch, dc decrease (inverted V stitch), and ending with dc. Then I went around the whole thing with a row of dc first, then worked out the rest.

The border will settle down after it's washed.

Hexie ABCs Skein 8-9

Hexie ABCs Skein 8 and 9

Yarn: Mary Maxim Starlette in color Soft Blue, 3.5oz,  180 yds (164.592 m) per skein

Hook: Bella Coco H/5.0mm

Pattern: Mayhem & Majesty Hexie ABCs

Finished size: 44" x 50"

All of Becca's filet crochet patterns are well done and easy to follow. You just have to pay attention and don't miss any skips. This pattern was no exception. It turned out bigger than I was expecting but not too much larger than listed in the pattern which is 47" x 45".

I used 9 skeins but had 1.1 oz left which I figure is about 50 yards.

I made no changes to the pattern.

ABC wip

I've started a baby afghan. I just about finished one skein. This is how far I got. I bought 10 skeins. Fingers crossed. This first bit is laid out on a love seat.

Yarn: Mary Maxim Starlette in color Soft Blue

Hook: Bella Coco H/5.0mm

Pattern: Mayhem & Majesty Hexie ABCs

The Starlette yarn is nice to work with. I've not had any problems with it thus far. I had one bit I cut out as you can see in the photo. That's not too bad for one skein.

Hook:  J/6.0mm

Pattern: straight dc, ch 15, work 100 rows in back loop only, add a border all around in dc

Size: 5 1/2" x 66"

Although as I said in my post on the other scarf, this is not my favorite yarn to work with. However, I really like the way this one turned out. Working in back loops and the added border gives it a nice look.

Ferris Wheel scarf

Yarn: Lion Bran Ferris Wheel in color Cotton Candy
Hook:  H/5.0mm
Pattern: straight dc, ch 22, work 140 rows
Size: 5 1/2" x 72"

This is one of my favorite colors in yarn. I love the blues and purples and how they work together.

Though this is a worsted #4 weight, I found it a bit on the thinner side, more a light worsted.

multi-color stash scarf

Another scarf. This one is multi-color using stash yarns. I used an I hook and worsted yarn with a chain of 19 and double crocheted across. I laid it out in the picture so you could see all the different colors used. There is no pattern to it. I just grabbed another ball and added it.

Persimmon scarf

I'm still working through my stash. This is Caron One Pound in color Persimmon. I have to say I've had this yarn for a long time as I really don't enjoy working with it. It's stiff. I use a J/6.0mm hook and I will wash it to soften it some. I chained 22 and worked 100 rows.

Finished size is about 7" x 60".

Hurricane Francine

Hurricane Francine has come and gone. Hurricanes take up many days before it arrives as we prepare. At my house we keep a lot of the prep stuff on hand year round so we were well prepared.

Thankfully we have power.

We had minimal damage to our home and are now in the "after hurricane" phase, catching up on laundry and dishes and regular stuff.

The most excitement I think was a live power line falling on my daughter's car (nobody was in it). That has been taken care of by the kind folks at Entergy and they are now back home.

I do have crochet items to post but will do that in the next day or two.

Domain name

The charge for the Crochet Cabana domain name is increasing so I've decided to let the name go. You can still get to the pattern site by using the full name https://crochetcabanablog.wordpress.com/ and for this  blog you can use https://crochetcabana.blogspot.com/ . If you enjoy these sites, please do bookmark them. The change will take place in early 2025 as it's already been renewed for this year so you can still use crochetcabana.com until then.

Thanks to everyone who has supported the site since it began many years ago. I know I've slowed down quite a bit since my cancer diagnosis so I do appreciate that you continue to follow me. FYI I've completed my radiation therapy and will begin a 5 year hormone treatment plan.

I'm still crocheting but trying to use up my stash so I have been working on scrap projects.

Draco blanket

Yarn: Mandala Sparkle in color Draco
Hook: H/5.0mm from Laurie Whitaker  (gifted to me by a friend)
Size: about 34" x 44"
Foundation chain: 104
Pattern: straight dc

For the border I worked one row of sc then a round of dc. As it happened when I got to the border, I had enough of the green to finish the dc round.

This little blanket took me almost a month to make because of my hand issues. My hand is doing much better now that it's had a bit of a rest. I'm still babying it a bit though. :-)

Cuppa Love

Here's a new way to change colors.

https://www.facebook.com/reel/859169582722131

Off my hook...

I finally finished the Cuppa Love afghan. It took forever because of my hand issues. Each square took several days to complete! The pattern itself is easy to follow with the Mayhem & Majesty filet numbers done for you.

Yarn: Color Theory worsted yarn in colors Canyon, Tourmaline, and Bone
Hook: I/5.5mm Bella Coco
Foundation ch: 45
Size: 12" x 13" one square
Pattern: Cuppa Love by Becca at Mayhem & Majesty

Here's a side view close-up so you can see the detail a bit better. I'm short so it's hard for me to get a good shot of an afghan. I can't get on a ladder as I used to do.

Gifted by a friend

My friend Fran Metallo in New Jersey designed a shawl pattern which she named after me - Sandie's Wrapped in Love Shawl. She made me a beautiful shawl using this pattern and my favorite colors. Here I am wearing it.

You can see more of Fran's designs at Ravelry.  She also has an Instagram page.

She also sent me this gorgeous crochet hook by Laurie Whitaker (Facebook). It's Footprints in the Sand design.

I have such wonderful friends! I love both items and look forward to using them.

Changes

Due to health issues, I'm making changes to my online sites.

At the moment, my plan is to return to blogger for Crochet Cabana blog posts. I've used almost all the allowed space for pictures at the free Wordpress site and blogger has unlimited space.

I'm downsizing the website as well. The patterns remain on the site presently. Most of the other pages are gone. The articles had not been updated in a number of years and crochet is constantly changing. Many of the pages simply had links to my YouTube videos anyway and those are still available.

Blogger also has unlimited pages as far as I can tell and I moved a few things over here. I may move the patterns here eventually as well but that's a project for another day. There are 139 of my own patterns if I counted correctly, plus a few others that I was kindly allowed to share.
