I decided to write up what I did for my dishcloth which was inspired by the hook and needle kit one. I think this one is a bit trickier to make though. The other is easier.
This cloth will be reversible because there will be edc on both sides. If you want them all on one side, then you can adjust it by holding your edc to the back instead of the front on every other row or putting a sc row in between the edc rows.

Reversible Back Cross Stitch Dishcloth
Material: 1 skein worsted weight cotton yarn for dishcloth or any worsted weight yarn for afghan, H hook
Size: about 8" x 8 1/2"
Abbreviations:
ch - chain
dc - double crochet
ea - each
edc - extended double crochet
sc - single crochet
sk - skip
st(s) - stitch(es)
tch - turning chain
yo - yarn over
Special Stitches:
Extended Double Crochet (edc) - yo, insert hook in stitch, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through one loop, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through 2 loops
multiple of 4 + 3
Note: If you make your dishcloth wider, then you need to make it longer as well.
ch 31 for 7 edc (27 for 6 edc, 35 for 8 edc)
Row 1: sc in 2nd chain from hook and in ea chain across
Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc across
Row 3: ch 3, turn, sk st under tch, sk next 3 sts, in next st work edc, holding edc in FRONT of work, work dc in skipped stitches except for one under tch, (double crochets will be behind the edc) * sk 3 sts, work edc in next st, work dc in each of the 3 skipped stitches, repeat from * across, work dc in last stitch
Row 4: ch 3 turn * sk 3 dc, work edc in edc from previous row, holding edc in front, work dc in each of the skipped double crochets, repeat from * across, dc in last dc (which is the top chain of the turning chain)
Row 5 - Row 15 (or to size): repeat R3
Row 16-17 or Final 2 rows: ch 1, turn, sc across.
Edging: sc all around, working 3 sc in each corner and 2 sc around each dc post
