hats for troops

A local friend has asked me for help in accumulating 150 hats to be included in care packages to be sent to troops serving in Afghanistan for Christmas. I will be personally delivering the hats I receive and make to Donna. We will be putting the packages together November 23.

If anyone would like to help with this effort, holler out to me at crochetcabana@gmail.com and I'll send you the address.

Here are the details:
Colors: Tans and browns - Dark brown, greens, or black -- dark colors (solid-no stripes) (I bought Patons Classic Wool Deep Olive, Black, and Chestnut Brown)

Yarn: 100% wool is needed because it is more flame retardant.
I personally am going to be getting some Patons Wool as I've worked with it before and found the colors and texture good, but any brand is fine as long as it's 100% wool and in these colors.

Size: gear towards men, about 7 1/2" to 10" in height and 22-24" circumference.

Special note: Please, when joining yarn, do NOT knot and cut at the knot or leave just an inch of yarn. Please cut yarn several inches from the end and weave/sew the tails in securely. Thanks!

If you work in a spiral, please make sure that your last round is even with the previous round. Thanks!

Both knitted and crocheted hats are welcome. No lacy patterns, please. Simple is best though single crochet or double crochet is fine. If you can't knit or crochet but would like to purchase a knitted or crochet hat to send, that is also fine.

You might try the hat on a man to see how it fits. It will likely be worn under a helmet. Single crochet hats are fine as well. Knitted hats are fine.

I will provide a thank you card for each soldier who receives a hat, a sticker with washing instructions, and a card with a line on which to write the first name and state of the volunteer who is donating the hat.

This is just an opportunity to thank a few soldiers for their service. Of course, there is no obligation to participate. I'm just throwing it out there for those who would like to help.

I've worked on this project before a couple of times and the soldiers are always happy to receive their packages. Donna and her group provides other supplies as well, not just hats. The packages are well stuffed.

Thanks!

Happy crocheting!
Sandie
