Blueberries Square

Blueberries Square
c2011 Sandra Petit

Materials: Red Heart Super Saver 512 Turqua and 886 Blue, H hook (or size needed for gauge if it is important you get 6” square)

Size:  6” square

Gauge: 4 sc = 1”, 4 row pattern is 1 1/4"

Special Stitches:
Berry Stitch: Insert hook in specified st, yo and pull through (2 lps on hk); (yo, pull through one loop) 3 times for a ch-3 (2 lps on hk), YO, draw through both lps on hook.

Note1: Unused color is carried along and crocheted over on each row
Note 2: Every other row will be straight sc in Turqua.

With Turqua, ch 22
Row 1: sc across (21 sc), change to Blue, do not cut Turqua, ch 1, turn.

Row 2: working over Turqua, with Blue, sc in ea of next 3 stitches, change to Turqua and work over Blue, * sc in next sc, berry st in next sc, sc in next sc, changing color on last sc, rep from *4 times, alternating color every 3 sts , (Blue, Turqua, Blue, Turqua),  to last 3 sc. With Blue, sc in ea of last 3 sc. ( 3 Turqua berries, and 2 Blue berries), change to Turqua, ch 1, turn

(Tip: before you make your ch-1, if you lay your Blue over the Turqua, front to back, it will make the color change less evident and lock in your stitch)

Row 3: working over Blue, sc across with Turqua, ch 1, turn (21 dc)

Row 4: continuing with Turqua, sc in ea of next 3 stitches, change to Blue * sc in next st, berry st in next dc, sc in next dc, change color on last sc as before, rep from * 4 times, alternating colors every 3 sts,  (Turqua, Blue, Turqua, Blue) across to last 3 sc. You will begin and end with Turqua. You will have 3 Blue berries, 2 Turqua berries, ch 1, turn.

Row 5: working over Blue, sc across with Turqua, ch 1, turn (21 dc)

Rows 6 – 21: Repeat R2 to R5 four times. On final row if you’re over 6” you can use slip stitch instead of sc.

If you’re not locked in to 6” you can make this any size you want by changing hook size and/or using different yarn. If you have trouble getting to 6” with the RHSS, try a thinner worsted yarn.

If you continue the pattern, you can use this procedure for a scarf as well.

If you would like this pattern as a pdf you can use Print Friendly (see below this post) or go to http://joliprint.com/ and put the URL of this blog post.

I am working on a video to demonstrate how to make this square. You can always find my videos at http://www.youtube.com/CrochetCabana . Here is the Blueberries Square video.

Happy crocheting!

  1. Very cute. These are the exact colors used in the Scarves for Special Olympics Northern California charity crochet project.
