Alphabet Afghan

The Alphabet Baby Afghan is finished. I put some maroon pillow cases behind the ghan to take the photo to bring out the letters a bit more.

For the rectangle letters I worked ch 21 with an I hook and followed the chart I developed for the block alphabet. I'm sure there are similar ones out there as well. The rectangles that don't have a letter are straight dc.

[Added note: I've received questions about the technique used in this afghan. It is called filet crochet. I have a tutorial on filet crochet and videos at the web site and YouTube channel. https://crochetcabanablog.wordpress.com/tutorials/filet-crochet/  [The first video demo is extensive and includes working a ribbon pattern and the second one is short and uses the fleur de lis. ]

Yarn used was I Love This Yarn turquoise, pink, and white tweed. Edging was worked with the pink.

Each square is about 6" x 7 1/2". Finished size of the completed afghan is about 33" x 48".

As I said before, for each rectangle I left a long strand about 3 x the length of the rectangle and these were used for assembly. I assembled the rows and then the columns.

Happy crocheting!
Sandie

  1. Such pretty colors, love the bright pink and tourq together. Trying to think about the size, is that about crib size? Did you like joining that way? I did it once, whip stitching with a long tail from each squares and found it cumbersome vs one long piece for each row, because of all the starts and stops?

    1. Sandy, I think it's 6 of one, half dozen of another. I didn't find it any more or less cumbersome. I've done it both ways but I think fewer tails to weave in by leaving the long tail. I think either way is fine if you leave enough of a tail. If your tail ends up being too short, then you've got a problem. Mine were plenty long enough. Then I sewed the leftovers in as usual.

  2. Where can I get this pattern? Are there video tutorials? Love the letters in the gap as opposed to using color or bubble stitches. Beautifully done!

  3. This is a stunning design. Could I ask where you got the pattern and if there's a video tutorial? I love how the letters are in the blank space rather than how I have tried using the popcorn stitch or colors to make the letters stand out...wasn't sure what the type of stitch to create the gaps is called. Colour combo is stunning! Sorry if I commented 2x I couldn't see my last attempt but this is my first time commenting from google plus on a blog. Do you have a Facebook page?

    1. It takes a while for the comments to show up as I have to approve them. Sometimes blogger fail and I never see them to approve. :-(

The pattern is my own design. I do have it written up but haven't put it anywhere yet. The letters are made using filet crochet (3dc mesh). Once you get the hang of it, it is easy to do.

    2. If you get to do a video tutorial (just for one letter/block) I'd love to learn the technique. I have the alphabet graph I can work but just need to work out how to do the mesh as I currently do the bubble stitch. Let me know if you ever do a video tutorial on the technique. I'd definitely watch!! I'll get googling to learn the technique. You are very talented!!!!! I only learned to crochet this year while on maternity leave and am hooked 😊

    3. I don't have a video tutorial on a letter but I have an extensive video working filet crochet on a ribbon and a second less extensive one working a fleur de lis at the Crochet Cabana YouTube channel.

    1. I finally put the pattern up at Crochet Cabana. There are minimal written instructions. Basically, it's a chart of the alphabet and numbers. You have to know filet crochet to work it. https://crochetcabanablog.wordpress.com/patterns/afghans-and-lapghans/

    2. I also created a playlist for filet. There are 8 videos listed. The last one is a short one just called Filet Crochet with the basics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1leNReC64k&list=PLoURBp_jXLSTksS2Qo_33dUbAMPdciznE

    3. Also, I forgot to address the left handed issue. You would have to read the pattern charts opposite to what I read them. Odds left to right and evens right to left. There are some videos on filet crochet for left handed persons by other crocheters if you want to look at those. It might help. Just search for filet crochet left hand.
